Hi all, I'd like to announce a few great improvements to RuneTrack. I realize this is a lengthy news post, but I assure you that it's entirety is definitely worth the read! Firstly, I know there hasn't been a news post in a while - but I have still been very much at work on the "behind the scenes" features at RuneTrack. With RuneTrack's explosive growth over the past few months, I noticed that various pages weren't running as smoothly with the addition of millions of new data values to process. To ensure that our efficiency here is maintained, I re-designed a significant amount of RuneTrack scripts with a better code structure, allowing for a much faster stat tracking and experience analysis. To give you an idea of the vast improvements made, take a look at this chart comparing certain pages' average load speeds: ![]() Note: Average load time refers to the time it takes the server to process the page (displayed at the very bottom of every page). The update efficiently reduced the amount of server calculations needed to be preformed on runtime by storing them in a retrievable database during the system update. As you can see from the above table, this was a major improvement. Additionally, I'd also like to mention the site design enhancements. As you may have noticed, most pages have undergone some nice graphic tweaks, presenting a sleeker feel to the site. I'd like to thank Branin (Lateralus) for all of his help in designing many these new site images. Note that there are still a number of graphical updates to come. Finally, I have introduced another RuneTrack feature to further improve tracking services. Since the name change update back in October which allows players to change their display names every month, Jagex has still not provided fansites with a way to easily obtain name change information. Unfortunately, this meant that many User Profiles went inactive, simply because there was no way to determine a players' new display names once changed. The individual name changer successfully gave players the ability to merge their old and new display names on RuneTrack - however, as a significant number of users have not done this, many User Profiles still remain stuck on a player's old display name. To solve this issue, I have now introduced a Name Change Contributions Page (also located on the left navigation menu under "Auto Timezone Converter"). The contribution system allows the community of RuneTrack users like you to help maintain the accurate and efficient stat tracking services, by ensuring that old display names are not left behind. Essentially, if you wish to participate, the contribution system will present you with a random old display name in the RuneTrack database which someone has recently switched to a new display name. To contribute, all you have to do is locate that player's new name by adding the old name to your Friends List (thus displaying their new name), and submitting their new name on the page. Simply by doing that, the player's entire Individual Tracking account will be completely updated to their new display name, and you will have saved their User Profile from going inactive. In a database of thousands of users, I knew that I alone would be unable to keep up with the many daily name changes, which is why I decided to give you all the ability to do so as well. Of course choosing to contribute name changes is completely voluntary - but if you ever have a spare moment in-game, you may want consider spending a minute or two helping keep RuneTrack up to date. Great work with the updates, glad to see RuneTrack taking another step in the right direction. I think you did a great job with the Speed/Design updates and have definitely noticed the difference. ![]() |

Great work Sword! ![]() Something I might recommend with the name change page, Maybe you could give us the option to change say 10 at a time? Whenever I'm processing name changes for FFDN I like to go through and add about 10 at a time, then go back and put them in the page. Could use something similar to the dropdown box on the FFDN database name change page if that user cannot be found for some reason. |

Yeah - had considered doing a multi-change page, but it just took so long to perfect the single name change page in ensuring that all stat history and records were merged correctly under every possible scenario (a user who creates a new RuneTrack account before merging their old one, a user who changes to a name not already in the RuneTrack system, a user that changes their name to an old display name of a completely different account, etc) - that I'm a bit reluctant to make any changes for now when it seems to be working well. In time I may have to add it - but for now though, it seems like the amount of contributions per day is higher than the amount of users who change their name per day, which is great. ![]() Also, just because of its public nature, I couldn't have a dropdown similar to the FFDN setup, as technically, someone could just come along and mark every single name as being "banned", just to try to mess up the system. I've noticed that a lot of names that have been skipped using the "generate a new display name" link have actually been clearly available in-game, and shouldn't have been skipped. For this reason, I created a queue system, where users who click the "generate a new display name" link give 1 unique "vote" to a name being banned. This name will still appear to other users for changing, just less frequently. The names with the least amount of "votes" (meaning they've just recently changed their name) will always appear highest in the queue, but once all of those are taken care of, names with higher vote counts will start appearing again. |

Hi Sword Kill11 and everyone else. As they say on talkback - I'm a long time user of Runetrack, but first time poster on your forums. I've been refreshing a few names and a thought crossed my mind - why am I doing this? Reason was I happened to strike a name and that player was on. Me being the friendly sort of person I am I messaged them and told them I had updated their details. We then had a longish conversation with me trying to show my intentions were honorable. I did manage to convince them of this. However the end of the conversation was that the person no longer used Runetrack. This got me thinking. If you were a regular user, you would be updating the details yourself. So why am I wasting my time updating player ####### with %%%%%% when they aren't using the site? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Regards Izakiwi2 |

Hi Izakiwi, Firstly, thanks for contributing the name changes. ![]() I see the point you're making - but let me explain my view on it. Essentially, RuneTrack user stat tracking is just as much for the general public as it is for that user. Even if that user isn't using the site, having their stat history information can be very valuable to have as a public record in certain situations. For example, the stat histories could come in handy if you're a clan leader looking for who's still active in your clan. Or maybe you've lost contact with an old friend who has changed their name - the only way to trace it to their new one would be RuneTrack. Or even more essential to the site's purpose - ensuring that names are updated provides more accurate Global Records. I assume that a number of the top RuneScape players who have unlocked profiles on this site aren't regular users. However, their presence in the system is necessary, or else the Global Records pages would be much easier to get on and not be nearly as representative of the extraordinary top daily or weekly xp gains. Perhaps the best example I can think of at the moment of User Profiles serving as a basis for public records is the current #1 player on the RuneScape hiscores - No Lifer ohi: http://runetrack.com/profile.php?user=No_Lifer_Ohi Before the release of Dungeoneering, he wasn't anywhere near the top of the highscores and didn't even have a RuneTrack account. However, just a few days after Dungeoneering's release, he became an instant figure of public interest for maintaining (and still maintains) the #1 rank for Dungeoneering, and thus for Overall as well. You can see from the "This signature has been viewed from 1 websites" description on his User Profile that he never even attempted to create a RuneTrack account (and likely doesn't even know about the site), but his profile was unlocked purely by the large volume of people investigating his stat gains (and thus consequently increasing his signature views). His account has only been unlocked for less than a month and already 600 unique people have typed in his name on RuneTrack, interested in viewing an analysis of his extraordinary xp gains. And even just for future reference - having the user stat histories and records provides a unique snapshot of various points in RuneScape's history that can't be found elsewhere. I'm sure the vast amount of data in the system could eventually be used to show general trends, such as the primary skilling focus of players in response to certain skill updates over a period of time, how the market price of certain raw materials psychologically impacts what skills players choose to focus on during that time, etc. Or, perhaps that player you updated the name for may not use RuneTrack now - but will be thankful in the future that their profile and records were kept alive if they do start using it in the future. As you can see there's many valid reasons for keeping a User Profile active, even if that individual player may not just happen to be using RuneTrack at the time. Doing so simply expands the wealth of information and usefulness of the site. Hope that answered your question. ![]() |

Hey there i have Made quite a few Name contributions, but there are a few that RuneTrack can't recognise. For instance a name pop's up i put it in my friends list, the new name arrives, i put the new name in the required box letter for letter and says it cant recognise or i have spelt it wrong. Which is why i press generate new name. I dont know if it is just me but about 10-15 of them say that daily. Plus i type in the old name yet it stays the same which is why i press generate a new name, is that the right thing to do. Please let me know ![]() Nay |

What is probably occurring is that those accounts have switched to being F2P, and thus don't exist on the highscores anymore (so the system errors out because you're trying to enter in an account name that doesn't exist on the highscores). One thing you can try is to search for their Adventure Log: http://services.runescape.com/m=adventu ... ord_kill11 If the user is F2P, it will indicate that the account is a "Non-member Account". Therefore, for every display name change in which that error occurs, the new account display name should be listed as a "Non-member Account" (or possibly "Private Profile") on the Adventure Log search page. If you could confirm that that's what's happening that would be great. ![]() |
