The Best Types of Lighting for every room in Your House
Each room must serve each room with a distinct purpose within your home, and the lighting you choose must reflect the purpose of each room. Some rooms, such as kitchens or the laundry room are best lit for task-oriented purposes, while others, like the living rooms, are better suited to general lighting that is indirect. The lighting requirements for each space will differ in terms of type and intensity. We sought out experts from the American Lighting Association to determine the most effective lighting for each area of your home. Here's how to best light every room of your home. See this le soleil for more information.

Lighting for Kitchens
Many kitchens, especially large ones, require several lighting options to ensure adequate lighting. To provide ambient (or general) lighting, opt for ceiling fixtures or recessed light source that will evenly distribute light around the space. Set up task lighting by placing lighting sources right above work areas. Pendants (which must be placed approximately 35-40 inches above the surface) are an extremely popular option for lighting over an island, and undercabinet lights are great for areas used for food preparation.

Lights accents can be added to your kitchen lighting design. Tape lights can be used to provide soft lighting to your kitchen during late-night hours. Strip lights and downlights are ideal for displaying food in glass-front cabinets, or on open shelves.

Kitchen areas that are used for cooking like the kitchen islands or other areas in which you usually chop vegetables will require more powerful lighting. When choosing lightbulbs it is important to remember the 70-80 lumens/square feet rule. About 30-40 lumens will be sufficient for the general areas of the kitchen that are not employed to cook food.

Furniture for the Dining Room
It's where conversations and socializing happens and a dark, moody dining space isn't the ideal place to be. Ceiling fixtures are crucial for good lighting, so you can find ceiling lights which can be flush-mounted and recessed in dining rooms.

A chandelier is able to provide lighting for the dining room as well as general illumination. For dining rooms with 8-foot ceilings chandeliers should be placed 33 inches over the table. Add 3 inches to the measurement over the table for every foot that is longer than 8 feet. The lightbulbs should offer approximately 30-40 lumens per square feet.

Living Room Lighting
Living rooms often serve many purposes, so you'll want lighting that can easily adapt to casual gatherings or cozy movie nights and other activities. Flexible track lighting is an excellent choice since it can serve as accent, task, or even ambient lighting. You can control the intensity of individual lights by moving them around, turning or rotating them. The adjustable beams will allow you to design the desired design or pattern of lighting without changing any bulbs.

Create your living space to feel like a movie theatre with lighting that does not create shadows or reflections. Pendants can serve for lighting in the living room while the TV is off. It is possible to move around the room safely with dimmable track lights or sconces. Living rooms usually require between 10 and 20 lumens. This is the typical for a room.

Bathroom lighting
Bad lighting in bathrooms can cause a negative atmosphere and make it unsafe. Avoid lighting fixtures which are too low in relation in relation to the mirror. They can cast unwanted shadows. Fixtures such as pendants or sconces on the opposite side of mirrors to create a more balanced lighting. If you have a bathroom that is shared think about sconces that are adjustable and can adapt to the specific lighting requirements. In bathrooms, a bright light is ideal. Thus, try to shine approximately 70-80 lumens per square foot.

Lighting for Hallways
As areas of transition between rooms, hallways don't have as many particular lighting issues as other areas. It is possible to attach sconces to the walls or a flush ceiling fixture that is mounted to provide light that isn't noticeable. You don't typically need particularly bright lighting in hallways therefore 5-10 lumens per square feet is typically sufficient.
