MIAMI -- Casey McGehee tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-out, two-run double, then drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th, and the Miami Marlins averted a series sweep by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Sunday. Pittsburghs Vance Worley pitched seven innings in his season debut and departed with a 2-0 lead. But the Marlins tied the game when McGehee doubled off Tony Watson, who entered the game with a streak of 21 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings. Leading off the 10th, Rafael Furcal fouled a ball off his leg and tumbled to the dirt in pain, but stayed in the game long enough to single. Pinch runner Ed Lucas advanced on a sacrifice, and Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and McGehees fly to right field against Jared Hughes (3-2) scored Lucas without a play. The Marlins earned their sixth walkoff win and broke a three-game losing streak. The Pirates had won four in a row and were bidding for their first three-game series sweep in Miami since 1993. Miamis A.J. Ramos (4-0) loaded the bases with none out in the 10th but escaped. On a 3-2 pitch, Russell Martin grounded into a 5-2-3 double play, and Clint Barmes struck out to end the threat. Worley was recalled from Triple-A before the game to fill in for left-hander Francisco Liriano, who went on the disabled list Wednesday with a left oblique strain. Worley allowed five hits and no walks. Miamis Henderson Alvarez allowed two runs in seven innings. Pittsburghs Jared Hughes escaped a jam in the ninth, retiring two batters with a runner at second. Pirates leadoff hitter Gregory Polanco, who has had a hit in all six games since breaking into the big leagues, had two infield singles and is batting .387. Andrew McCutchen had two hits and is batting .444 during an 11-game hitting streak. Polanco singled in the third and scored the games first run on Starling Martes double. That ended Alvarezs streak of 27 consecutive scoreless innings at Marlins Park. Josh Harrison singled home a run in the fourth to put the Pirates ahead 2-0. Miamis rally in the eighth began when pinch hitter Jeff Baker led off with an infield single, and Rafael Furcal also singled. Reed Johnson and Giancarlo Stanton struck out, but McGehee tied the game with his third hit. McGehee leads the majors with 30 hits with runners in scoring position, and hes batting .411 in those situations. EDMONTON -- Simeon Rottier is back on the Edmonton Eskimos roster after a meeting Tuesday with general manager Ed Hervey, who was informed by the CFL his public criticism of the offensive lineman breached the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. Rottier was singled out by Hervey at a news conference last week and criticized for his on-field performance in a loss to Calgary on Sept. 2. The GM said he wouldnt be upset if Rottier didnt play again this season. Hervey met with Rottier before practice Tuesday and the team announced he would play Saturday when the Eskimos host Winnipeg. "From our meeting today we both mutually agreed his play must improve," said Hervey. "He knows how I feel, how competitive I want this team to be. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a person and a tremendous amount of respect as a player. "But it doesnt change the fact I was disappointed in the play of our team and disappointed in many players. But when it comes to our offensive line, Ive been critical of our offensive line play since the outset and we expect, and I know Simeon will echo these sentiments, we expect to keep our quarterback on his feet." Hervey was upset after quarterback Mike Reilly was sacked seven times in a 37-34 loss to the Stampeders. Rottier was then benched for the rematch last weekend, a 22-12 Calgary victory. Rottier, a five-year CFL veteran in his second season in Edmonton, said hes just "trying to move on as fast as possible and the best way to do that is just focus on Winnipeg rightt now.dddddddddddd" A soft-spoken, religious man who prefers to avoid the spotlight, the 29-year-old Rottier said the meeting with Hervey needed to happen. "We cleared it up and were ready to move on," he said. "We realized we both have the same goal and thats to win." Hervey, a first-year GM, said sometimes feathers have to be ruffled but hes confident his players will step up. "You rise to the challenge and rise to the top or you fold up and you go home," he said. "I dont think we have a team full of guys who want to fold up and go home." Hervey added he expected Rottier to respond in a positive manner. "Simeons a professional. Players have an enormous amount of pride that cannot be shook by words. As far as negativity is concerned, he would have had every right to say what he wanted to say. Im pretty sure if I was in his position, knowing me and my history, I would have said something." Hervey also felt the benching may ultimately benefit Rottier and the Eskimos. "I know Im going to light a fire," Rottier said. "Theres things I need to work on to help the team. For me I try to live with grace a so its not my personality to lash out." The 1-9 Eskimos sit in last place in the West Division standings. The CFL Players Association issued a statement this week that called on the league to take action against Hervey. A CFL spokesman said the league informed Hervey last week that his comments were inappropriate. There were no plans for discipline.
