NEW YORK -- Four weeks after straining his right hamstring, David Wright is ready for the next step in his recovery. The All-Star third baseman was headed to the New York Mets complex in Florida on Thursday, a day before the team begins a nine-game road trip. He said he feels fine swinging and fielding, but hes not running full speed and isnt ready for rehab games. Mets manager Terry Collins had said Wright might play in a minor league game this weekend. "Hopefully soon," Wright said. "I think Im ahead of schedule." After playing through nagging soreness in his hamstring for about a week, Wright was injured Aug. 2 while legging out an infield single. He said the medical staff has told him its a six-week injury, which would put him on track to return in mid-September. The Mets captain is determined to come back before the season ends because he doesnt want to go into next year with any uncertainty about his health. But he wants to make sure he rehabs properly and heals completely so his hamstring doesnt become a chronic problem. "I want to finish the season strong," Wright said. "All signs are good. I havent had a single setback yet." A seven-time All-Star, Wright is hitting .309 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs. While the team was home, he worked with the Mets medical staff at Citi Field. Now, hell report to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Philadelphia infielder Michael Young cautioned Wright this week against rushing back from a strained hamstring. Young said he did just that and got reinjured during the 2009 pennant race with Texas, costing him two more weeks. Wright said he appreciated the gesture. "Basically the cardinal rule I told him was -- and this was told to me by other guys who had hamstring injuries -- the second you think youre ready to play, wait three more days," Young said. "That way you know youre ready." Its been a difficult month for Wright and the rebuilding Mets, who are 11-14 since his injury. All-Star ace Matt Harvey was diagnosed with a partially torn elbow ligament Monday and hopes to avoid Tommy John surgery. One day later, New York traded two of its top run producers (Marlon Byrd and John Buck) to Pittsburgh for a pair of prospects. "I think that the Matt Harvey situation obviously kind of blindsided everybody, as well as hes been throwing the ball," Wright said. "But Ive done my rehab with him the last couple days and hes in good spirits." The 24-year-old Harvey has blossomed into one of baseballs most dominant pitchers during his first full season in the majors. But his injury jeopardizes New Yorks aspirations of contending for a playoff spot next season. Tommy John surgery would likely sideline Harvey for all of 2014, though the right-hander tweeted Tuesday that hell be back on the mound next April. He was heartened after talking to other pitchers who had similar symptoms or injuries and didnt require surgery, including Philadelphia right-hander Roy Halladay. The Mets said no decision will be made until Harvey is re-examined in a few weeks after the swelling subsides. "Hopefully, he can just rehab it. But if surgery is the option, then weve got to find a way," Wright said. One reason Wright signed a $138 million, eight-year contract last winter was his faith in general manager Sandy Alderson and all the young power pitching the Mets have on the horizon. However, Harvey is a huge cornerstone. "I dont think one injury that may or may not affect next year is going to affect the overall plan," said the 30-year-old Wright. "With the money that we have coming off the books this year, I expect us to go out there and make this team better, whether its through free agency, whether its through trades. I still believe in the vision that Sandy has. "Hopefully, Matts back next year. But if not, Im still confident in the plan," he added. In fact, with a few improvements, this could very well be a decent team over the next few seasons. I will go into more detail when digging into the Canucks Off-Season Game Plan, which will be coming earlier this year since they are part of the non-playoff contingent, there are some reasons to think this is a favourable situation for President of Hockey Operations Trevor Linden and whomever he selects to be the new general manager. Pascal Siakam Jersey . CEO Steve Koonin on Tuesday told the Hawks flagship radio station that he made the decision to discipline Ferry but allowed him to keep his job managing the team. He did not say what the punishment was, but noted that he relied on a law firms three-month investigation of Ferry and him describing Deng as someone who has a little African in him.Government officials in Washington state, home to four Western Hockey League teams, have been investigating the working conditions of the teams mostly-teenaged players over the past year, TSN has learned. Matthew Erlich, a spokesman for Washingtons Department of Labor and Industry, told TSN that officials recently referred the case to the state attorney generals office and added that the labor department is waiting for a legal opinion from the attorney general before pursuing its investigation further. "This is a matter that focuses on child labor issues and potential wage-payment claims, both are important at labor and industries, where our top important goal is to ensure workplaces are safe," Erlich said. "Employees should also be paid for the work they do." Over the past few months, the debate over whether major junior hockey players should receive more money for playing has become a polarizing one. On one side, team owners say players receive modest reimbursements for their expenses, as well as a lucrative scholarship package that can be exercised so long as they dont go on to a career as a pro hockey player. Moreover, many teams in small markets are struggling to get by, the owners say. "Our teams in Washington and Michigan have been in contact with government officials and have explained that our players are student athletes and are participating in and contribute to their sport the same way as other amateur athletes," Canadian Hockey League commissioner David Branch told TSN. But officials with Unifor, Canadas largest private-sector union, paint a different picture. They say major junior hockey teams have become cash machines and that any problems that small market teams might have can easily be solved with revenue sharing. Unifor is pressing the Ontario provincial government to form task forces to scrutinize the working conditions in the Canadian Hockey League. Unifor president Jerry Dias hopes other governments follow suit. To that end, Dias met Tuesday with B.C. Premier Christy Clark, making his case for government action. "She was shocked," Dias said. "We explained that in the Western Hockey League, players are still making $50 a week, same as they did in the 1980s. Its just not right. These clubs are being run as for-profit businesses, and so little of the money finds its way to the players. Its basically slave labour." The stakes are high for CHL team owners. Dias said an average 40-hour work week addds up to about 2,000 hours a year.dddddddddddd If players in Ontario were paid the minimum wage of $11 per hour for half the year, it would work out to about $11,000 per player, or at least $220,000 a year for each team. Its unclear how much teams now pay for players, but in recent years, the OHL paid players $55 a week. The league recently introduced new guidelines where teams reimburse players for expenses instead of paying them a set weekly amount. Eight of the CHLs 60 teams are based in the U.S. The four teams in Washington are the Everett Silvertips, the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Spokane Chiefs and the Tri-City Americans. In the OHL, the Plymouth Whalers and Saginaw Spirit are in Michigan. If players on U.S.-based teams were declared by the government to be employees, instead of student athletes, as the CHL says they are, they might also have more rights under worker compensation laws. One CHL team owner said that he has been in touch with his local member of provincial parliament to caution that if the governments do change their policies on major junior hockey, it might have a ripple effect on sports across the country. "If we have to pay minimum wage, then other junior leagues, Junior B and Junior C leagues, will have to do the same thing," said the owner, who asked for anonymity because he said CHL team owners have agreed that Branch will speak publicly for the group about the issue. "Maybe it will apply to Canadian universities that charge admission for sports games. It could have a huge effect." But that might not be completely true. Theres a difference between a Junior B hockey player or Canadian university player and a player in major junior - teams in major junior hold a draft and control for years the rights of a player. The players dont choose where to play. "It should not come as a surprise that team owners are active in their communities and some may be in contact with elected officials at all levels to express their views on range of issues," Branch said. "Any change to the status of CHL hockey players would undoubtedly impact all other amateur athletes in our country, regardless of what sport they participate in," he said. "For all of these sports there are multiple complicated questions regarding expenses and the status of student athletes and other amateur athletes, all of which have the potential to impact on numerous sports programs in Ontario and throughout Canada."
